Ecuador's conservation projects

 

La Hesperia is a nature reserve located in the western range of the Andes at an altitude of 1100 – 2040 meters above sea level. With an area of 814 hectares, it is located in the center of the Rio Toachi-Chiriboga IBA (Important Bird Area, declared by Bird Life International and Conservation International) and it is part of two important bioregions: The Tropical Andes and the Chocó Darien – Western Ecuador, considered within the top five biodiversity hotspots on earth. more+

 

 

 

 

 

Located at the foot of the Tungurahua Volcano, the eighthectare (20 acre) San Martín Zoo is home to approximately 60 species of birds and mammals in addition to many more of reptiles, amphibians and fish; nevertheless, it is much more than just a living exhibit of Ecuador’s biodiversity. The Zoo is active in programs of conservation of both the flora and fauna native to the region, and frequently carries out environmental education campaigns with nearby communities. more+

 

 

 

 

 

 

Volunteers work in a controlled plot of land to eliminate introduced/ invasive plant species and to restore native and endemic species, growing the plants first in a greenhouse, and then transplanting them to their permanent locations. Volunteers also assist in community projects, such as installing a new water pipeline for the local community. In addition, they mentor children from INNFA, working with them in hippo-therapy, gardening, environmental education. more+

 

Galápagos (San Cristóbal island)

 

 

 

 

It works towards an integrated development in collaboration with Galápagos residents, in an alternative and responsible manner.It carries out programs of education designed to change the behavior of the local population towards a sustainable lifestyle. Also manages projects of environmental protection, governability and civic participation, including socioenvironmental ethics.It promotes the development of individuals, equity, and the strengthening of local capacity. more+

 

 

 

 

 

Only an hour away from Quito, the small community of Yunguilla has taken great strides in the path of sustainable development while maintaining both its cultural and natural heritage. Almost fifty families have joined forces to work in the production of jams and jellies from local fruits, the elaboration of delicious cheeses, sustainable agriculture, reforestation, research and tourism. more+
